DOMINICAN EARTH CENTER
JONQUIL RIDGE
A bright green and yellow sign with nine Jonquils representing the
Dominican founders of St. Catharine Congregation welcomes visitors and
retreatants to Jonquil Ridge. The sign was designed by the Earth Education
Coordinator and painted by Cuc Tran, a 1998-99 St. Catharine College student.
The lone Jonquil in the left hand corner represents God, the Creator whose
blessings we experience daily in the work and activity, the prayer and
contemplation available on Jonquil Ridge. Jonquil Ridge is seven acres of
former pastureland set apart
to model simple and sustainable
living.
WOODLAND TRAIL
The
Woodland Walking Trail was the first project of our plan for earth care to be
completed. It is a ¾ mile, walking trail through one of the three timberland
preserves on St. Catharine property. The monies for this project were secured in
part from a grant through the U.S. Forestry Department under the auspices of
Glenn Dattilo, forester with Kentucky State Forestry. It was Mr. Dattilo
who initiated the Timberland Stand Improvement (TSI) with St. Catharine farm in
the early 1980s. Adults and children alike visit the Woodland Trail, by
prearrangement in the summer, fall and springtime of the year. Guided walks
allow for exploration of the forest floor, flower and
fauna.
