TAKE BACK THE TAP
There is a growing trend that advocates moving away from bottled water and going back to tap water. It is safer from many different vantage points: your health, your budget and the environment. With the recent collapse of the bridege in Minneapolis we are becoming more and more aware of the aging infrastructure in our country. This also applies to the pipes and treatment plants that are meant to ensure access to safe, affordable, public water for the present time and for generations to come. BOTTLED WATER
The bottle water industry continues to grow. Many companies are now adding
vitamins and flavors to entice consumers. Here are some facts to remember
about bottled water:
| In 2001, $10,700 per minute of every day = the amount of money spent by Americans for bottled water. | |
| Bottled water is hard on the environment. Making plastic, (glass and aluminum as well) required resources and can release toxins into the atmosphere. Fuel is needed to transport the bottles to stores. | |
| Bottled water is not any safer for your health than tap water. Bottled water conforms to FDA standards. Tap water must comply with more stringent EPA standards. In 1999, the National Resource Defense Council tested 103 brands of bottled water and found that one-third had levels of chemical or bacteria contaminants that exceeded state or industry standards. |
If you are concerned about your tap water being safe, buy good filters. If you want to carry water with you, consider a reusable thermos. In doing so we don't use water that belongs to others and ensure our local water is safe. --Joye Gros, OP
