People around the
world continue to express opposition to the policies of the United States on the
Iraq war. While the House and Senate are trying to move forward on the
withdrawal of troops from Iraq, many are awaiting General Petraeus’ report in
early September. This report will likely determine what, if any, action will be
taken by our legislators.
Amidst all this, reflection and questions continue not only on why the policies must be changed but how they might be changed. The Western Province statement on the Iraq War states, “we value life and support peace as God’s plan for human interaction. We believe this war is unjustified and has caused wrongful loss of life and untold destruction of the environment.” While this statement provides the why, the how continues to be globally discussed.
One positive action we have observed is the working at regional diplomacy these past 4-6 weeks. A comprehensive peace strategy in the region would likely commence stabilization in the area. An Iraqi peace conference where Iraqis come together to make peace among themselves and obtain a ceasefire among the various sects of the region would give Iraqi’s ownership of decisions. Refugees and the internally displaced must be dealt with in a compassionate way. Those working with groups in this refugee crisis must feel supported. Policies in the region must not undercut care for people and money must be channeled to those groups helping refugees and the internally displaced even if this means bypassing the government.
Action: Contact Senators and Representatives in their home districts this month. Express your deep concern on the issue of the Iraq war. Urge legislators to not only withdraw troops from the area but to work at a comprehensive peace strategy, provide an environment for an Iraqi peace conference and work at enabling refugees and the internally displaced to obtain money or help from groups without Iraqi governmental barriers.

At
a recent meeting in Kansas City, MO, leaders from many religious congregations
had the opportunity to meet with Sister Marie Therese Hanna, OP. Sister is
the former prioress of the Dominicans of St. Catharine of Siena in Iraq.
Sister gave us a little window in to what life is like for the Christians in
Iraq. She called upon us to seek ways of forgiveness and reconciliation.
