PEACE PRAYERS

"Peacemaking is not an optional commitment. It is a requirement of our faith. " U. S. Catholic Bishops: The Challenge of Peace

Creator God, let us be peacemakers
    More ready to call people friends than enemies
    More ready to trust than mistrust
    More ready to love than to hate
    More ready to respect than to despise
    More ready to serve than to be served
    More ready to absorb evil than to pass it on
Creator God, let us be more like Christ.  Amen

Prayer for Peace
O God, We turn to you
in the terror of the night and in the darkness of our days.
We bring the cries of Mother Earth and the tears of all her children.
Today we pray especially for world peace --
for the leaders in our nation and around the world --
may they do all they can to resolve the present situation peacefully;
for all nations to address the capacity of their arms programs
and what that might mean to the future of your world;
We pray for men and women gone off to war,
for their families, for their children;
We pray for victims of war “men, women, children
whose lives hang in the balance
as leaders negotiate their future.
Give us all
your grace, your listening heart, your hope, your peace.
Prince of Peace, help us bring you to our world.

President (General)Eisenhower's famous "cross of iron" speech, given almost a half-century ago (in 1952). His words were prophetic:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, is a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.... This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under a cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

On September 11, 2001 6000 children worldwide died of hunger.

The Prayer of St Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred . . . let me sow love
Where there is injury . . . pardon
Where there is doubt . . . faith
Where there is despair . . . hope
Where there is darkness . . . light
where there is sadness . . . joy
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled . . .as to console
To be understood . . .as to understand,
To be loved . . . as to love
For it is in giving . . .that we receive,
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
It is in dying . . .that we are born to eternal life
