ZAMBIA:
A PEOPLE in AGONY
Zambia is one of the twenty poorest nations in the world. One in five Zambians is HIV positive. The country is suffering drought and famine. Yet there is a seed of hope for Zambia. The Dominican Missionaries of the sacred Heart of Jesus are a congregation of 90 sisters with 30 Zambian women preparing to join them. These sisters are the only Dominican presence in Zambia. They are involved in education, health care, social service.
In April 2000 five Dominican Sisters from the Dominican Alliance visited Zambia. Since that time the Alliance African Connection Committee has been formed to strengthen relationships between US and Zambian Dominicans.
Ways that help can be offered :
Education gifts. Zambian Dominicans are blessed with many new members. With this blessing comes the economic challenge of educating younger women for ministry. Your contribution would help to continue their education for ministry.
Used books and educational materials. The Alliance African Connection Committee regularly sends used textbooks and books on spirituality to our Zambian sisters. They also send books that will help with the education of the children. Your contribution would help with the high postage cost.
Bear Project. Zambian Dominican sisters at the Kavu Clinic in rural Fatima offer a simple antiretroviral drug just before delivery to pregnant mothers who carry the HIV/AIDS virus. Two doses of this drug usually prevent transmission of AIDS from mother to newborn. By purchasing a small toy bear you can enable the Kavu Clinic to offer hope to mothers and infants. The profit from one bear gives one baby the chance to live AIDS free. Click here to read more about this project.
Famine Relief The people of Zambia are suffering from famine in various regions of the country. Lengthy dry spells in southern, western and eastern parts in Zambia and some flooding in the west have hindered crop production. High levels of poverty and the number of people with HIV/AIDS who are notable to work have also contributed tot he shortage of food. According to the UN World Food Programme, about 430,000 people are in dire need of food. Your contribution would help.
