Sr.
Marie Michelle Lavin, OP
Born -- September 9, 1908
Professed -- April 30, 1937
Born to eternal life -- October 13, 2008
Mary Lavin was born September 9, 1908, in Boston, Massachusetts to John J. and Mary Keane Lavin, both from Ireland. Her parents, a brother Francis, and a sister Mildred preceded her in death.
She entered St. Catharine Novitiate on September 6, 1932 and was professed April 30, 1937, as Sr. Marie Michelle.
Her first assignment was to St. Brendan School, Elkins, West Virginia. She then went to St. Louis Bertrand, Louisville, Kentucky, and on to Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village, New York; where she remained for 16 years. She then taught at St. Dominic, Springfield, Kentucky, St. Agnes, Reading, Massachusetts, and on to St. John, North Cambridge where she remained until she retired from teaching.
In her retirement years Sister Marie Michelle lived at St. Patrick Convent and Rosary Manor, Watertown before coming to Sansbury Care Center in 1996.
Just a little over a month ago her family and Dominican Community gathered to celebrate Marie Michelle’s one hundred years of life. It was a joyful occasion for her because she was surrounded by those she loved. She just enjoyed seeing others happy around her. This was so typical of her that there is nothing recorded of her life in her file. However, the number is legion of those who remember her in their hearts.
Marie Michelle was a gentle woman whose warm smile welcomed every person who came to her door. Her positive attitude lifted the spirits of those who stopped to say “hello.” In spite of failing hearing and eyesight she had a keen interest in people and events around her. Although pain was her constant companion, she never complained about it. Rather, she managed to turn the topic of conversation to others.
Marie Michelle, may you be welcomed by the Father who chose you for his own, and may you intercede for us. Thank you for the many ways you blessed us. You taught us wisdom; you taught us love.
