Sister Villana Sheeran, OP

Born: February 8, 1913

Professed: August 15, 1933

Born to Eternal Life: June 28, 2008

Margaret Lucille Sheeran was born February 8, 1913, at McQuady, KY to Thomas and Monica Wheatley Sheeran.  She was the third oldest in a family of six – five girls and one boy.  All have preceded her in death.

Although her family moved to Louisville when she was 14, she never lost her love for McQuady.  In later years she spoke lovingly about her father’s farm and her family’s activities in Breckenridge County.  She was especially proud of the fact that the stones used to build the Catholic church in McQuady had come from the Sheeran farm.

With the support and approval of her family she entered St. Catharine Novitiate on February 2, 1932 and received the name Sister Villana.   She was professed August 15, 1933 and began her teaching career that September at St. Bartholomew School in Chicago.

After just one year there, she went to Reed, KY.  Much to her joy, she returned to Chicago the following year and spent 18 years teaching at St. Bartholomew and Our Lady of Peace Schools and one year at Our Lady of the Wayside School, Arlington Heights.  When, in her later years, she recounted experiences in her life, the city of Chicago received almost equal time with the farmland of McQuady.  She also taught at Sacred Heart School, Jeffersonville; and St. Louis Bertrand and SS Simon and Jude Schools, Louisville.

She received a BS in Education/History/Theology from Siena College in 1966.  She returned to St. Catharine, in 1969 as a teacher and assistant librarian. In 1983 she retired from these positions.

When she moved to Sansbury Health Care Center in 2000, Sr. Villana entered readily into the religious exercises and social activities, but even though she enjoyed her social life there, she continued to hold on to the hope of returning to “her room” in the Motherhouse.

Now, Sr. Villana, may you be received into your heavenly mansion and rejoice in the room that the Lord has prepared for you.
