Sister James Ann Ross, OP

Martha Lucille Ross was born July 19, 1918, in Louisville, Kentucky to James and Ann Brennan Ross.  Her parents and her siblings William, Mary Catherine, Eva Lee, Sr. Thomas Aquinas, OP, Charles and Lillian have preceded her in death.

On February 2, 1946, she entered the Novitiate at St. Catharine, taking the name Sr. James Ann.  After her profession on August 15, 1947, she began her teaching career in the rural area schools of West Memphis, Reed and Hopkinsville.  Then after two years at St. Bart’s in Chicago, she moved westward to Nebraska where she taught eleven years at St. Mary School, Bellevue, and one year at St. Anthony School, Cedar Rapids.

In 1968, Sr. James Ann began her Indiana period at St. Augustine School, Jeffersonville.  After one year there she moved to Sacred Heart School where she spent twenty-two years in teaching and community service.

Her life was spent in faithfulness to prayer and service.  She was always present at community liturgies and gatherings, and her name usually headed every volunteer list.  From its inception, Sr. James Ann was a faithful member of the Thursday evening scripture study group.

Her hands were never idle. Even when riding in a car, she crocheted dishcloths for the gift shop.  In later years she sat busily engaged in her Word Search book.  Wherever a game of Spite and Malice was in progress, Sr. James Ann usually could be found playing—and winning.
