Sister Georgeanne Sutherland, OP
    Born March 19, 1926
    Professed August 15, 1951
Born to eternal Life -- August 22, 2007

Dorothea Sutherland was born March 19, 1926 to James J. and Dorina Hache Sutherland in Cambridge, MA.  She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marjorie Curley.  She is survived by three brothers, James, Andrew, and Robert.

On September 4, 1949, she entered St. Catharine Novitiate, receiving the name Sister George Anne.  Later the spelling was changed to Georgeanne.

On August 15, 1951, she made her first profession and began her teaching career at St. Joseph, Belmont, MA.  Other teaching assignments include Our Lady of the Wayside, Arlington Heights, Il.; St. John, Lima, Oh.; Resurrection, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and St. Vincent Ferrer, Brooklyn, N.Y..  But it is at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Louisville where Sr. Georgeanne is probably best remembered as a teacher and a principal.

When she left Our Lady of Mt. Carmel her pastor wrote a letter of commendation to St. Catharine Community praising her capabilities.  The faculty also wrote:  "As members of the faculty of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel we would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation of Sister George Anne Sutherland for her years of dedicated service to our school.  As principal she has completed her responsibilities with great effort, sincerity and love."

Then after three years of teaching at SS. Simon and Jude in Louisville, Sr. Georgeanne resumed the profession she had been engaged in before entering the convent.  She became secretary to the Southern Regional coordinator, a position she held for twenty years.  There, as in the classroom, Sr. Georgeanne was always kind, efficient, and a great listener and mediator. She was thoughtful about writing notes for any occasion or “just because….”

Sister Georgeanne, as we remember her, dressed to perfection with her signature earrings, will be missed by the entire community, but especially by the sisters she served in the Southern Region and by her friend from childhood days Father Charles Dolan, as well as her close friend Irene Denzik.

Georgeanne, we commend you to the Father and ask that you intercede for us in heaven as you frequently did on earth.
