Mary Isabelle Theresa Carey was born January 10, 1911, at West Roxbury, MA, the daughter of James H. and Katherine Hassett Carey.  She had one brother, Arthur.

She graduated from St. John High School, N. Cambridge, where she came to know the Dominican Sisters.  On February 3, 1930, she entered St. Catharine Community.  since the Rev. Hugh Francis Blunt had recently been made pastor of St. John's, Mother Bernadette suggested that she receive the name "Hugh Francis" to honor him.

After her profession, August 4th, 1931, Sister Hugh Francis taught at St. Dominic School in Springfield and Holy Rosary Academy in Louisville, Kentucky.  The remaining years of her active ministry were divided between New York and Massachusetts: Queens Village and Brooklyn, NY; Lowell, E. Boston, Charlestown, and Watertown, MA.  she served as superior and principal at St. Francis de Sales school and St. Michael School, as well as Regional Coordinator for the Eastern Region.

Former pupils, sister companions, and friends all have warm and delightful remembrances of Sister Hugh Francis -- especially her humor.  At the 50th anniversary celebration of Our Lady of Lourdes School a former pupil said to her, "Did you k
