Sister Agnes Mauricia Walsh
Born: August 3, 1918
Professed: April 30, 1939
Born to Eternal Life: December 14, 2008
Agnes Walsh was born August 3, 1918, at East Boston, Massachusetts to Maurice F. and Agnes Qualters Walsh. She had four brothers and two sisters, who along with her parents, have all preceded her in death.
On September 6, 1937, she entered St. Catharine Novitiate, taking the name Sr. Mary Rosamond. Later she returned to her baptismal name, adding "Mauricia" for her father and brother.
Sr. Agnes Mauricia was professed April 30, 1939. After spending two years in the program for the young professed, she began her teaching career that took her to Charlestown, Watertown (both Rosary Academy and St. Patrick), Lowell, Plainville, Reading, Waverley and Belmont, all in Massachusetts.
While teaching, she began writing and published her first work in 1958. Her academic and professional degrees include: B.A. in French/Philosphy/English from Siena College, Memphis, TN; M.A. in Religious Education from Providence College, Providence, RI; Md.A. Medical Assistant from U.S. Medical Training Academy, Pasadena, FL; EMT Emergency Medical Technician, St. Petersburg Junior College, St. Petersburg, FL; N.D.E.A. Fellowship Award in the Language Department from the University of Kentucky.
In 1972, Sr. Agnes Mauricia began her ministry as a Pastoral Associate in Transfiguration Parish, St. Petersburg, FL. The Florida Catholic published an article about her work there in 1978:
"Because she follows the Thomistic Theology which advocates ministering to the body as well as the soul, Sister Agnes completed courses for medical assistant at the U.S. Medical Academy and emergency medical technician at St. Petersburg Junior College. She is qualified to perform all of the duties required of a doctor’s assistant…In addition, she is trained in counseling and frequently is called upon to utilize her comprehensive educational background in her pastoral ministry."
Referring to her pastoral ministry as "a very humbling experience," she considered herself as an instrument to spread God’s word.
Sister Agnes Mauricia left detailed instructions for her wake and burial. Among them was the request that her own picture did not appear on the written reflection, but rather the picture of Jesus which appears here.
Today we pray she may see fulfilled what she wrote in the mid-70’s: "It is not at all beyond the realm of possibility that He may yet pleasantly surprise us by a look-see at what He has prepared for us who love Him."
