BORN TO ETERNAL LIFE

Margaret Lucas Riedel, OPA

Born -- January 10, 1916
Born to Eternal Life -- September 27, 2005

Margaret was born and raised in Remsen, Iowa.  She graduated cum laude from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and later moved to Chicago, IL.  There she met and married Daniel J. Riedel, who died in 1968.

Margaret spent many years in California where she earned masters degrees in both Education and Library Science from the University of California in Berkley.  She was employed as an elementary librarian and then as a librarian at the university.  Margaret was an accomplished musician who played first violin in an orchestra and was also a concert pianist.

Upon her retirement, Margaret moved to Memphis, TN, where she met St. Catharine Dominican Sisters and became an associate of the community.  Under the auspices of Sister Marina Gibbons, OP, President of St. Agnes Academy, Margaret created the St. Agnes Academy Archives, where she worked for twenty years processing and filing all past and current records.  As a gift to St.. Agnes, Margaret dressed a set of dolls figures, one to depict each style of habit worn by the sisters during the history of the schools and one depicting each uniform worn by the students.

Margaret was a faithful member of the Hoc Chapter Group in Memphis.  During the recent past, she was no longer steady enough on her feet to risk attending meetings.  However, she remained interested in the community and was in contact by phone and through visits with her chapter group.

Margaret  died peacefully in her sleep on September 27.  Her body will be taken to Iowa for funeral and burial.
Her daughter, Liz Bateman, is grateful for all of our prayers.  Margaret is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Bateman, and two grandsons, Brandon Riedel and John Daniel Bateman.

Compiled by Elizabeth Bateman and Sr. Mary Della Quinn, OP and printed in Day-by-Day.
May she rest in the eternally loving arms of God.
