Sr. Marguerite-Marie Brou (87) died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Mohun Health Care Center in her 65th year of religious profession.  Born to Felicien Joseph Brou and Helene (Fontaine) Brou in Wallace, Louisiana, Marguerite was one of eight children.  She made her profession of vows as a Dominican Sister of St. Mary, New Orleans, on January 6, 1945.

Sr. Marguerite earned a Bachelor’s degree in French from St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans, Master’s degrees in French and Library Science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and a Ph.D. in French Literature from Laval University in Quebec, Canada.  Sr. Marguerite served at St. Mary’s Dominican College as a French professor, Registrar, Business Office Assistant, Bookstore Manager, Director of the Library, Chair of the Humanities Department, and Chair of the Foreign Language Department.

For ten years, Sr. Marguerite was the Archivist for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where she translated aged documents from French to English. Later, she became the Treasurer for the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse. In 1984, she returned to St. Mary’s Dominican College after it closed and served as the Archivist until 2000.

Sr. Marguerite is most remembered for her clever songs, witty skits, and love for the South. She was admired for her ability to persevere, whether enduring chronic pain or surviving the two hurricanes through which she lived. Cultured, lover of classical music, and avid reader, Sr. Marguerite brought happiness to all of those she knew, served, and worked alongside. At the time of her death, Sr. Marguerite was living a life of prayer at Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus, Ohio.
