Sr. Marian Keane (age 100) was born on September 16, 1908, in New Haven,  Connecticut, to James Keane and Sarah (Costello) Keane, the middle child of five.  She and her siblings were close growing up, though both her older brother and sister died at young ages, leaving her to take on the role of eldest child. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and grateful for the faith instilled in her by her family and the Sisters who taught her.

Sr. Marian led a long life of teaching and sharing her faith with others. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from Albertus Magnus College and taught in public schools before becoming a Sister (professed as Sr. Charles Borromeo in 1947). Assignments took Sr. Marian to many schools throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. She taught the middle school grades, fifth through eighth, and loved being active in all she did.

Her favorite job was working with the choir as an audio technician, recording the members singing for the choir leaders to review and use for improvement. She also appreciated the opportunity to work on fostering positive Catholic-Jewish relations in another position. Her proudest accomplishment was being a part of a parish RCIA program, from which she left the legacy of a long list of people she brought into the church.

Sr. Marian loved to travel. One of her greatest life experiences was going to the Holy Land; standing on the mountaintop where Jesus was transfigured was a lasting memory for her. She also loved to visit her youngest sister in Tucson, Arizona, and continued to travel there until very recent years. Most of all, Sr. Marian loved the gift of prayer. “If you pray, the Lord will do the rest of the work for you,” she was known to say.
