Alma Fern Stine was born December 1, 1914, in Lebanon, Kentucky to George Carl and Pearl Lee Powell Stine.  She was the oldest of their children, Allen, Dorothy Marie, Carl, and Bobby who are all deceased. When she was 13 years old her mother died, and her father remarried three years later.  From this union were born her survivors, Jerry, Tony, Johnny, and Peggy.  Fern spoke often and lovingly about her stepmother and siblings.

She attended St. Augustine High School in Lebanon and St. Catharine Junior College, graduating in 1935.

In February 1936, she entered St. Catharine Novitiate and received the name Sr. Mary Dominic.  On August 15, 1937, she made her first profession.

Once again she became a student and received her nursing certification from SS Mary and Elizabeth Hospital, Louisville.  For many years of her ministry she held positions of administration and supervision—Director of Nursing:  St. Catherine Hospital, McCook, Nebraska; Mary Immaculate Hospital, Lebanon, Kentucky; Rosary Hospital, Campbellsville, Kentucky; Patti A. Clay Hospital, Richmond, Kentucky  -- Administrator:  St. John Hospital, Spalding, Nebraska; Mary Immaculate Hospital, Lebanon, Kentucky; Cedars of Lebanon, Lebanon, Kentucky.

In 1951, she earned a B.S. in Nursing Education/Science from Spalding College, Louisville.

No matter what the task, Sr. Mary Dominic put her whole heart and soul into the effort and acted on her convictions.  “She told it like it was.”  In the days when segregation was still practiced, in subtle ways Sr. Mary Dominic made sure there was equal service for her patients.

Story telling was her gift.  No one could tell a story quite like Sr. Mary Dominic, and she never seemed to run out of episodes.  She was a good listener, too, and often dispensed down-to-earth advice to those who sought it.

In 1986, Sr. Mary Dominic returned to St. Catharine Motherhouse to begin a new phase of her life.  She became interested in sewing and crafts and gradually expanded to a full-fledged craft shop.  Her quilts were works of art.  During this period of her life music and reading were important companions.

On March 31, 2006, Sr. Mary Dominic moved to Sansbury. The transition was not easy, but in her own practical way, she went about the process of making herself at home.

There must be great rejoicing today as Sr. Mary Dominic is reunited with her beloved family and close friends, Sr. Theodore Kline and Sr. Mary Agnes Wilson.  No doubt the whole court of heaven will soon be regaled by her stories.
